Hey,

When I heard the word curtain wall. I just imagined a house where the walls had been replaced by curtains. As ridiculous as the idea was, I shared this with a friend. He laughed and laughed and told me the actual curtain wall meaning. Now, I'll pass on the good karma and share the information I learned. 

What is a curtain wall?

It is a lightweight wall that is constructed from aluminium and glass. In simple terms, it is a structurally independent system that spans multiple floors. It is installed beyond the edge of the slab. It transfers the load of gravity and the wind upon the structure of the building. It is put in place to make sure the interior of the building is airtight and not exposed to any element. 

Curtain walls can be categorised into three main systems: face-sealed, water-managed, and pressure-equalised. They offer the building methods to seal units and prevent intrusion of moisture. The last one keeps the building airtight. It makes the building energy-efficient and is constructed after noting down the effects of thermal expansion and contraction. 

What does curtain wall building do?

The system is employed to protect the interior of buildings against exterior natural phenomena. It will give protection against sun exposure, temperature changes, earthquake, rain, and wind. Further, the curtain wall is used for both structural safety and interior environmental control.
