What is Deferred Maintenance?

Hello Hema, the society I live in faced the situation of deferred maintenance last year. So, I’ll be able to tell you what does deferred maintenance means. Whenever maintenance work is pushed back or postponed due to limited funds, time or staffing, it is called deferred maintenance. This leads to a lot of problems in the long run. I’ll tell you more about deferred maintenance below.

What is Considered Deferred Maintenance?

As I said above, deferred maintenance is the process of delaying required upkeep, repairs and maintenance for society buildings and other infrastructure.

This situation mainly occurs when repair and maintenance activities are not carried out in a systematic manner. This can be because of several reasons, which are as follows:

1. Insufficient funds.

2. The difference in opinion between the society members.

3. Unavailability of staffing.

4. Casual or careless attitude towards the repairs.

What are the Results of Deferred Maintenance?

The results of deferred maintenance can be shown in the following ways:

1. Deteriorating state of equipment.

2. System failure.

3. Unexpected breakdown.

4. Increased maintenance cost.

Deferred maintenance eventually causes the property to be more damaged and might reduce its value if not repaired on time. It's best to talk with the relevant person and sort out the problem.
