The demand charges on electricity bill refer to fees assessed based on the highest level of electrical power (in kilowatts or kW) consumed by a customer during a specific interval, often measured in 15-minute or 30-minute periods. These charges are distinct from energy consumption charges, which are calculated based on the total electricity used in kilowatt-hours (kWh). For example, if a commercial establishment has a peak demand of 50 kW during a billing cycle, and the utility company charges Rs. 20 per kW of demand, the demand charge for that period would be Rs. 1,000 in addition to the energy consumption charges based on kWh usage. This is the basic idea of what are demand charges in electricity bill.

What is the difference between usage and demand charges?

The differences between usage and demand charges are:

  • Usage charges are based on the total energy consumption measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), reflecting the amount of electricity used. Whereas,  demand charges are determined by the highest power demand in kilowatts (kW) during specific time intervals, focusing on peak power requirements.

  • Usage charges cover the cost of energy itself and apply universally to all customers. Demand charges recover infrastructure and capacity costs associated with meeting peak demand, primarily affecting commercial and industrial customers.

  • Usage charges are common for residential and commercial customers, while demand charges are encountered by larger commercial and industrial users with varying peak demand levels.

When I started paying my electricity bill on my own, I came across a demand charge in electricity bill. I had no idea what it was, so I asked my brother. He told me that iIndependent of how much energy is used, the Fixed Charge is used to recover the fixed cost of electric service. It is rented for the use of the labour and equipment that Electric has invested in to give its customers dependable and safe electric service, including poles, cables, and transformers.

What are fixed charges in electricity bill?

An energy charge is used to recoup energy used, and a fixed charge is used to recoup the basic cost of the infrastructure and electric service used by the customer, or, to put it another way, we can say that indirect rent is paid for using the electricity company's wires and poles. The sanctioned load determines the fixed charge. It implies that a higher load will result in a higher fixed charge.

What is the fixed charge in electricity bill formula?

Rate * Sanctioned Load = the fixed charge

The fixed fee is deducted in accordance with the consumer's connection load and the meter's demand. When the maximum sanctioned demand exceeds 75% of the load,

Assume the domestic connection's sanction load is 2 KW.

Sanctioned Load (in KW) * Rate = Fixed charge

Example: Fixed charge = 2KW * 90(Per KW) = Rs.180.

Fixed Charge = 1.5 (as 75% OF 2KW)*90 = Rs. 135, if the demand sanction on the metre is less than 75% of the load.

The electricity department charges a fee to the customers. This is billed as a substitute for maintaining the connection with the electrical department. Even if a customer doesn't spend any money in a given month, the department charges a set fee to keep the connection going.

Demand charges are extra fees that companies impose on industrial, commercial, or non-residential customers in order to maintain a steady supply of electricity. The amount of these fees that businesses must pay on their monthly electric bills is typically quite high. They may account for more than or equal to 50% of the entire electric bill.

Demand fees may, in some cases, be more expensive than the energy element of an electric bill. As a result, the monthly electricity cost for a business is determined by both the amount of electricity used during the month and the rate at which it was consumed. The largest quantity of energy a company uses at any particular period during a billing cycle is referred to as demand. Now you what is demand charge in electricity bill.

Let me tell you how maximum demand is calculated.

Maximum Demand= Connected Load x Load Factor / Power Factor

The maximum demand in kVA = Peak Load in kW / Power factor

Example:

Now you are running 5 numbers of 5.5 kW motor @ 90% of the load with 0.86 pf. The maximum demand will be :

Peak Load = 5 * 5.5 * 0.9 = 24.75kW

Maximum demand = Peak load / power factor

These charges are charged from every service user in the commercial sector on a monthly basis to maintain the maintenance and utility service continuously. I was also curious about the demand charges in electricity bills and why they are charged. But then I got to know the main reason why they are being calculated. I will tell you about what is fixed demand charges in electricity bill India.

Fixed demand charges in electricity bill

The demand is the calculation of how much power a consumer uses in a given time period. Fixed demand charges in the electricity bill is the charge collected from every commercial consumer as per their power uses in the specific time period. These charges are usually applied to commercial and industrial sectors more than residential because they use more power due to high loads. The fixed demand charges can be charged as per the use of utility service in the area and can result in higher charges due to the higher use of the utility.

Why are fixed demand charges applied?

The fixed demand charges are applied to every commercial consumer as per their utility uses. This is due to the fact that utilities must maintain sufficient production and distributing potential to manage the requirements of customers at times when the system is most heavily used. Customers that use a lot of power for a short period of time contribute further to the expenses of creating and maintaining the essential infrastructure during peak times through fixed demand charges.

Some points about fixed demand charges in electricity bill India:

1) The fixed demand charges are charged from the commercial or industrial sectors based on the largest quantity of power drawn at any given time throughout the billing period.
