What is geopolymer?

Geopolymer concrete is an innovative and eco-friendly construction material and it is used as an alternative to Portland cement. Geopolymer is environmentally friendly since it reduces the emission of  CO2 , unlike Portland cement which is responsible for the high emission of  CO2.

The geopolymer concrete building is made up of waste products like fly ash. Fly ash is generated from the thermal power plants and ground granulated blast furnace slag. The primary component of geopolymer concrete is silicon and aluminium which are provided by thermally activated natural materials such as kaolinite or industrial byproducts such as fly ash or slab. Geopolymer cement is also known as alkali-activated cement or inorganic polymer cement.

Properties of Geopolymer concrete:
  • It produces low heat of hydration compared to other concrete cement.

  • The dry shrinkage is lower compared to other types of concrete.

  • The resistance to fire is better than OPC-based cement.

  • The chloride permeability of the geopolymer concrete is ‘low’.

  • This is very acid resistant concrete.

This was all about what is geopolymer concrete in a nutshell. I hope you find this informative.
