I recently assisted my brother with the construction of his house in Dehradun. I learnt so much about the quality checks, material type, construction style and much more. When I first went on site, I was confused because my brother kept talking about different types of concrete grades. So I asked him what is grade of concrete. He explained it to me in great detail. I will try to put it out for you here. What are the grade of concrete? Grade of concrete, simply put, is the strength of concrete measured after 28 days of construction. The grade of concrete construction is based on structural integrity and type of concrete mix. Nominal mix of concrete is generally used in small scale construction, whereas design mix is used in large scale constructions. Here is a table defining different types of concrete grades along with the concrete mix ratio, and compressive strength. Need help designing your house? Concrete Grade Mix Ratio Compressive Strength
MPa (N/mm2) psi
Normal Grade of Concrete
M5 1 : 5 : 10 5 MPa 725 psi
M7.5 1 : 4 : 8 7.5 MPa 1087 psi
M10 1 : 3 : 6 10 MPa 1450 psi
M15 1 : 2 : 4 15 MPa 2175 psi
M20 1 : 1.5 : 3 20 MPa 2900 psi
Standard Grade of Concrete
M25 1 : 1 : 2 25 MPa 3625 psi
M30 Design Mix 30 MPa 4350 psi
M35 Design Mix 35 MPa 5075 psi
M40 Design Mix 40 MPa 5800 psi
M45 Design Mix 45 MPa 6525 psi
High Strength Concrete Grades
M50 Design Mix 50 MPa 7250 psi
M55 Design Mix 55 MPa 7975 psi
M60 Design Mix 60 MPa 8700 psi
M65 Design Mix 65 MPa 9425 psi
M70 Design Mix 70 MPa 10150 psi
MPa is Measurement for PSI or pounds per square inch. The mix ratio is of cement, sand, and coarse aggregate. I hope now you know what is grade of concrete and different types of concrete grades. When our house was being constructed, I saw that the builder pointed out once that the grade of the concrete needed to be changed and made stronger. He is a reliable and famous builder, so obviously he did not want to ruin his name. I deliberately asked him, what do you mean by grade of concrete and that is when I learned its meaning. "Grade of concrete" refers to a standardised classification or designation used to indicate the strength and composition of a concrete mix. If you are planning to buy a house or construct one, you should know what is concrete grade and its types.

What is grading of concrete?

Grading of concrete refers to the process of selecting and combining suitable proportions of cement, aggregates, and water to achieve the desired properties and performance of the concrete mix, such as strength, workability, and durability. It involves choosing the appropriate mix design, including the sizes and types of aggregates, to ensure the concrete meets the intended structural and functional needs.

What are different grades of concrete?

The different types of grades of concrete I am aware of as of now are:

Construction purposes Grades of concrete used

For small-scale constructions

M15, M20, M25, etc.

For large-scale constructions

M25, M40, M45, M50, etc.

If you are looking for the ideal concrete ratio for residential or business development purposes, you must know about the different grades of concrete. I regret not knowing about it when I was building my home. But now that I know about it, I can help you understand the concrete grade ratio as well.

The parameter that specifies the concrete's minimum strength and composition is the grade. This implies the vigour acquired by the substantial something like 20 days after the culmination of the development. A concrete grade's strength is measured in MPa, where M denotes the mix and Pa denotes the overall strength. Read on to learn more about it.

What are the different grades of concrete?

Concrete grades are divided into three categories:

  • Ordinary concrete grade

  • Standard concrete grade

  • High strength concrete grade

Ordinary concrete grade: There are three types of typical concrete grade: 10M, 15M, and 20M Their compressive strength is relatively low and lies in the scope of 1,450 to 3,250 PSI. These are by and large used to develop asphalts, carport floors, and outer stopping that are normally non-primary.

Standard concrete grade: The standard concrete grade category includes concrete grades between M25 and M45. It is used to build walls, loading bays, slurry pits, high-tensile beams, concrete girders, and walls, among other things.

High-strength concrete grade: Concrete with more than 50 MPa is classified under the high substantial grade. Its compressive strength differs somewhere in the range of 6,525 and 9,425 PSI. The construction of high-rise buildings and structures in the vicinity of water bodies is the primary application for the high concrete grade.

Concrete mix ratio

The proportion of the cement, sand, aggregate, and water in a concrete mix is known as the concrete mix ratio. The type of construction and required strength are used to define these mix ratios. Albeit the IS Code gives ostensible and standard blend proportions for various development work in light of involvement and testing.

Different types of Concrete Grade with concrete grade proportion and Compressive Strength have already been explained by Mr Pushpendra in his answer. So, I will share with you the different types of concrete mixes.

Type of Concrete Mix

  • Nominal concrete mix

  • Designed concrete mix

Mix Nominal: Concrete of grades M5, M19, M15, and M20 can be made with the nominal concrete mix.

Mix for Designed Concrete: In designed concrete mixes, the proportion of the concrete's components is determined to ensure that the finished product has specified properties while remaining economical overall.

I hope my answer was helpful to you in understanding the different grades of concrete.
