GST Basics:

India has implemented a comprehensive indirect tax known as GST on the sale of goods and services. It did away with many levels of taxes in an effort to simplify the tax system and promote economic growth.

What is GST on Cement?

An essential component of construction, cement, is subject to GST regulations. It is under Chapter 25 of the Schedule of GST Rates. The type of cement, how it is packaged, and whether it is sold loose or in bags can all affect the GST rates for cement. Cement is typically subject to a common GST rate that has been adjusted over time to promote greater uniformity. For different forms of cement, such as Portland cement, slag cement, and others, there are multiple GST rates that apply.

Using a GST rate of 28% and an extra cess of 12%, cement goods are subject to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) computation. Therefore,

the overall GST rate for cement items is 28% + (12% of 28%) = 31.36%.

The following calculation can be used to determine the GST owed on cement products:

(

Original Cost * GST Rate) / 100 = GST Amount

For instance, the GST amount can be computed using the formula above if the original price of cement is Rs. 100 per bag:

GST Amount =

(200 * 31.36) / 100 = Rs. 62.72

The GST on cement bag plus its original cost would be Rs. 200 + Rs. 62.72 = Rs. 262.72 in total.
