In an attempt to shrink the disparity between rich and the poor who wish to own a roof over their head, the central government has been putting in many efforts since many years. One such initiative was the introduction of Indira Awas Yojana. This is a scheme which came under Rural Landless Employment Guarantee Programme. What are the objectives of Indira Awas Yojana?The objectives of the Indira Awas Yojana were as follows:
Support to be provided for construction of houses in rural areas
Designing houses based on the requirements of the dwellers
To use modern technology and affordable material
To carry out construction which would generate employment, and will be environment friendly and sustainable
To encourage joint ownership of property within husband and wife
Construction of these houses to be carried out by the beneficiaries
The beneficiaries list includes:
Households Below Poverty Line (BPL)
Households headed by women
SC/ST individuals
Non SC/ST individuals BPL
Ex-servicemen
Widows
Free bonded labourer
Disabled individuals
People belonging to marginalized section of society
