When I called a painter to repair the cracks in wall columns, he told me about the injection grouting waterproofing procedure. However, before explaining the same to you, I will tell you about what is injection grouting. Well, it is the process of filling the cracks, honeycombs, in masonry or concrete structural members, under pressure with a material that cures in place to get the desired results, such as preventing water movement and strengthening a structure.

PU Injection Grouting Process: Drill the Holes on the Surface

Drill the ports or holes in the cracks at a regular interval. The distance between the 2 ports depends upon the types of cracks. The minimum depth and diameter of ports are 5 cm and 2.5 cm, respectively. For small cracks, the distance between two ports can range from 150-200 mm while the distance can range between 300-400 mm for larger cracks.

Seal Cracks Between Ports

Fill the crack between the ports with polyester, epoxy, or cementitious materials. Let the seal harden. If cracks pass through the structure, like a wall, the surface seals and ports are applied on both sides.

Clean Cracks and Ports

Clean and flush the holes and cracks properly before you start grouting. You can do it manually with clean water by using a vacuum for cleaning the cracks. You should sprinkle the cracks with water. Double-check the port system and surface sealing.

Grouting the Hose Connection

For a small grout pressure up to 350kPa, a hand-held, cone-shaped fitting on the grout hose is enough. For large grout pressures, short pipe nipples are connected to the holes to get grout hose connections. Fix the pipe or nipple in the holes and seal it with adhesive to make sure it doesn’t move from its place.

Injection Grouting on the cracks

Now, use a grouting machine to inject the grout material into the crack. It needs to be filled with pressure. I want you to know that injection grouting requires skilled labour and the temperature on the site needs to be taken into consideration while processing.
