Land use classification of land in land law in India is a system of classifying land according to its intended use. This system is used to regulate land use and to ensure that land is used in a sustainable manner. Let me tell you more about it.

Classification of land under land law

The land use classification system in India is based on the Land Use Classification Manual prepared by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. The manual classifies land into the following nine categories:

  1. Forests: This category includes all land that is classified as forest under any legal enactment dealing with forests or administered as forests, whether state-owned or private, and whether wooded or maintained as potential forest land.

  2. Non-agricultural land: This category includes all land that is not used for agriculture, such as land used for residential, commercial, industrial, and recreational purposes.

  3. Barren and unculturable land: This category includes all land that is not suitable for agriculture or any other productive use.

  4. Permanent pastures and other grazing lands: This category includes all land that is used for grazing livestock.

  5. Land under miscellaneous tree crops and groves: This category includes all land that is used for growing trees and other woody plants, such as orchards, plantations, and bamboo groves.

  6. Culturable wasteland: This category includes all land that is capable of being cultivated but is not currently being used for agriculture.

  7. Current fallow: This category includes all land that is currently not being used for agriculture but has been cultivated in the past five years.

  8. Other fallow: This category includes all land that is not currently being used for agriculture and has not been cultivated in the past five years.

  9. Net sown area: This category includes all land that is currently being used for agriculture.

Hey,

There are different types of land in India, and all of them have different use and classification. You wouldn't construct a building on agricultural land that had nutritionally dense soil. In the same way, you wouldn't plant crops on a barren commercial plot. It is necessary to know land use classification in India.

What is land use classification?

It is the classification of land that provides information about the land. It tells us the type of land, types of human activity involved in land use, assessment of environmental impacts, and potential or alternative uses of land. It is a classification of and according to its functionality and use by people.

A land use classification certificate is provided by the authority within towns and cities. Zoning laws and regulations have been created to protect finite resources. There are different laws for residential, agricultural, commercial, and industrial land. Other than these four, sometimes land is classified into recreational and transportation land as well.

According to land use land cover classification, land which is owned by the public is deemed as public land. Private land is privately owned by an individual(s). Certain plots of land have been deemed as protected under the Indian government like tribal land or religious land. No one is allowed to encroach on the protected land.

I hope my answer on land use classification in India has ended your confusion.
