There are many changes that have been made to the laws of this country. Previously, married women were considered to be symbolic property of their husbands. In the current scenario, Married Women's Property Act exists to safeguard the interest of married women in real estate. Take a look at my answer to know more.

What is Married Women's Property Act ?

The Act was passed in 1974 wherein the rights of married women were solidified. Several policies were introduced to safeguard their interest. The earnings of  married women were considered to be their separate property in accordance with the married women's property act. It was specified that money or property acquired by a married woman shall be deemed to be her separate property.

The means of acquiring property can be either of the following :
  • Employment

  • Occupation

  • Trade carried on by her.

  • Exercise of  literary, artistic or scientific skill

  • Savings and investments of such wages, earnings and property.

Earlier, the property of married women was managed, handled and placed under legal care of her husband. The married women property act brought amends to theis law.

Women's right to property act states that under Hindu Women's Rights to Property Act, 1937. Women can claim an equal share in the property as their male counterparts. Widows can also claim to have their share of the property.
