What is maximum value of power factor?

This is more of a physics question, I am going to try to explain it to you. I hope you remember cosine, and sin.

Power factor is an expression of energy efficiency. It means determining the ratio of working power to apparent power or demand.

To determine power factor you will have to define cos of angle between voltage and current.

You can analyse the maximum value of power factor using the power triangle (given in the attachment below)

Power factor = CosΘ

OA = VI Cosφ representing active power in watts

AB = VI Sinφ representing reactive power in VAR (voltampire reactive)

OB = Vi representing power in VA (Voltampere)

We know that

OB

2

= OA

2

+ AB

2

(kVA)

2

= (kW)

2

+ (kVAR)

2

So, Cosφ = OA/ OB = kW/ kVA

If you observe the power triangle, you will know that kW cannot be more than kVA and you can arrive at maximum power when kW = kVA

So as per above equation

Cosφ = Cosφ

M

= 1

Therefore, what is maximum value of power factor? It’s 1.
