The Maximum Demand Indicator (MDI) in an electricity bill in India represents the highest level of power demand recorded in kilowatts (kW) during a specific billing period, typically a month. This is MDI meaning in electricity bill. It plays a crucial role in determining peak demand charges for commercial and industrial consumers. I hope you have understood what is MDI kw in electricity bill.
How to calculate the MDI in an electricity bill?
The Maximum Demand Indicator (MDI) in an electricity bill represents the highest power demand recorded in kilowatts (kW) during a specified billing period, usually a month.
To calculate it, find the peak demand from your meter's recorded data. Its formula is:
Maximum Demand =Average Load/Load Factor
For example:
If your metre data shows the following maximum demand values during a month: 50 kW, 55 kW, 60 kW, 70 kW, and 75 kW, the MDI would be 75 kW (the highest value).
Utility companies use this MDI to calculate peak demand charges. If, for example, the rate is ₹10 per kW, your peak demand charge would be ₹750 for that billing period, in addition to energy charges based on total consumption.

Since I have a commercial shop, while availing my electricity connection, I came to know certain electrical terms. Amongst them I also learned about what is MDI in electricity bill. Before discussing about mdi reading in electricity bill there are two things we need to learn. That is resistive loads and inductive loads.
Resistive loads signifies appliances such as lights, water heater, coil heaters. An inductive load signifies anything that runs on motors such as ceiling fan, pump, air conditioners, refrigerators. Resistive loads identify the amount that you have asked for. Inductive load identifies are just like coffee with froths. An amount lesser than what is asked for. In this situation, the current is utilized to create a magnetic field which is not used for executing the actual work.
Let's consider the coffee example to understand more. Suppose you take a cup of coffee with 75% of actual coffee and 25% froth, so here you are paying 25% more for the coffee you are purchasing. Similarly if a motor runs on 1 HP that is 745 Watts you will run in 75% that can be considered as 0.75 power factor. The energy that the appliances have to supply is 1/0.75= 1.33HP. The energy is lost due to the magnetic field in the motor. This is the MDI calculation in electricity bill.
When you sign up for your electricity requirement you have mentioned the amount of electricity you will require. If the demand exceeds, you need to pay a penalty. This is what is called MDI penalty in electricity bill. The full form of MDI is Maximum Demand Indication.
