Hi Meera,

A few months back, I hired an architect to design my house. The first thing that she asked me was what kind of architecture I would want for my home. I was taken aback as I was not aware of the types. She explained the types of architecture, including modern architecture, which caught my attention. So, I asked her what is the modern architecture and how do I distinguish it from other architecture.

Here is what she told me.

What Is Modern Style Architecture?

She explained that the modern style of architecture is a style of building that focuses more on function and streamlined form over ornament-type designs that can be seen in other types of architecture. This style began around the 1930s and mainly involved sharp and clean lines.

She also added that modern architecture has evolved over the years, and to distinguish them, I had to look for six main traits.

  • Flat or Low-Pitched Roofs:

In modern architecture, low-pitched or flat roofs are quite common. This is because this design focuses more on simplicity over ornate or historical elements.

  • Large Windows

: Modern architecture focuses on promoting a seamless indoor-outdoor environment. To achieve that, big windows that allow natural light are necessary.

  • Exposed Structure:

Unlike other structures, modern structures are exposed. Exposed means that the structure's physical bones, such as beams, etc., are not put under covers.

  • Simplicity

: In these designs, simplicity is achieved by not using ornamentation. This helps in creating an asymmetrical space.

  • Open Floor Plans

: Open floor plans are what makes modern architecture attractive and appealing to the eye.

  • Modern Materials

: Materials before modern architecture were only limited to, Brick, stone, etc. But now, materials such as glass, steel, concrete, etc are also used.

And that is what is the modern style architecture is all about, as explained by her.

My cousin is an architect. As I was always fascinated by modern architecture, I used to ask her, “What is modern architecture style?”. She used to tell me that modern architecture is all about function and form, and it's always changing and evolving.

What are the modern architecture meaning?

My cousin sister told me that the early 20th century saw the emergence of modern architecture, which is distinguished by its simplicity, reliance on natural materials, and preference for utility above form. Modern structures frequently consist of glass, steel, and concrete, and they frequently have open floor layouts and big windows.

After understanding the modern architecture definition, she emphasised on the most common characteristics of modern architecture:

  • Simplicity

  • Use of natural materials

  • Modern architecture is often said to emphasize function over form.

  • Open floor plans.

  • Large windows

When my wife and I were searching for our dream home. we came across a house with beautiful modern architecture. We were captivated by the elegance and uniqueness of modern architecture. We loved the clean lines, minimalistic design, and innovative use of materials that characterized this style. For us, modern architecture represented a perfect blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal. ILet me explain to you

what is modern architecture style.

What is modern architecture meaning?

Modern architecture refers to the architectural style that emerged during the post-independence era, characterized by a departure from traditional architectural elements and the incorporation of innovative design principles. This period, roughly from the 1950s to the present day, witnessed a significant shift in architectural practices, influenced by international modernist movements and the need to address India's changing socio-cultural context.

Modern architecture is marked by several key features.

  • Firstly, it emphasizes functionality and efficiency, with a focus on rational design and the use of new materials and construction techniques. Clean lines, geometric forms, and open floor plans are commonly seen in modern Indian buildings.

  • Secondly, there is a preference for open spaces and integration with nature. Buildings often feature large windows, courtyards, and landscaped areas to create a seamless connection between the indoors and outdoors.

  • Another characteristic of modern Indian architecture is the incorporation of traditional Indian elements and motifs in a contemporary context.

  • Architects have creatively blended modern design principles with traditional elements such as jali work, chhajjas (overhangs), and courtyard layouts to establish a sense of cultural identity while embracing modernity.

Now that you know

modern architecture definition, let me give you a few

prominent examples of modern architecture in India. They include the works of renowned architects like Charles Correa, Balkrishna Doshi, and Raj Rewal. Their designs, such as Correa's Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur and Doshi's Aranya Low-Cost Housing in Indore, showcase a fusion of modernist principles with Indian cultural nuances.

In recent years, sustainable and eco-friendly practices have become integral to modern Indian architecture. Green building concepts, energy-efficient technologies, and passive design strategies are being integrated into the design and construction process to minimize the environmental impact of buildings.
