I loved ‘ Bob the Builder’ growing up. I was so intrigued by the field of construction that I became a constructor. I gained knowledge about different components such as the mullion by reading books, blogs and pamphlets. I will share mullion meaning and other interesting things below.
What is a mullion?
The dictionary definition of mullion is ''vertical support that divides the window and stabilises the wall around the window.'' It is the vertical element that divides and supports the glass panels or windows within the structure of a building. In short, it is the supporting structure to the overall facade. It supports the wall by stabilising the horizontal lintel, or the arch.It is made of materials aluminium, steel, or wood etc.
It helps by providing stability and enhancing the overall appearance of the building. It distributes the load evenly and withstands external forces such as wind pressure.Moving on with what is mullion in construction. It divides large glass areas into smaller sections. It improves energy efficiency by providing a barrier against air leakage and thermal transfer.
Why is it Important ?
The wind generates lateral forces which leads to tremendous pressure and force over the surface areas of glass. The million system transfers the force from the glass to the actual structure of the building. It is done with the use of angles, inserts, support metal, drilled anchors, etc . Without a proper mullion system, the property can face expensive losses as well as loss of life.
I hope my explanation has cleared ‘mullion meaning’.
