We got our home repainted last year, and we used oil bound distemper. I was not quite aware of the oil bound distemper coverage area and the benefits of using an OBD paint. Then I discussed it with my father, who told me that OBD is used for its good adhesion, breathability, and washability. He also said it provides excellent matt finish at a reasonable cost.

What is the Oil Bound Distemper Paint Coverage?

My father told me that oil bound distemper coverage is typically around 18-25 square metres per kilogram per coat. I also did some research on the benefits of using an oil bound distemper paint, which I am sharing below.

Easy to Apply

This paint is easy to apply, and it dries quickly, which means you can paint your walls within a short duration of time.

Breathability

Oil bound distemper paint is a breathable paint, so there is no chance of moisture in the wall. This prevents the growth of mould and mildew on the surface.

Cost-Effective

Oil bound distemper is relatively less expensive compared to other kinds of paints, making it an economical and budget friendly option for homeowners who want to paint their walls without spending a lot of money.

However, one major disadvantage of OBD that I found was, it requires more maintenance than other kinds of paint. It has a shorter lifespan and thus, may require repainting every few years to maintain its appearance.

I hope my answer gives you some idea about oil bound distemper.

My best friend is an interior designer. While I was discussing my home interiors with her, she said I should get a fresh coat of paint for my walls. After much deliberation, I decided to go with Oil bound distemper. I wanted to know what is oil bound distemper coverage area to order the paint accordingly. She said that going by general rule of thumb, it could be anywhere between 180 sq ft to 295 sq ft/ litre per coat.

Since you have asked the same question, I feel obligated to share snippets from our conversation on this matter.

Where to use Oil Based Distemper?

Once we discussed the oil bound distemper coverage area, I got a detailed insight into the area to be covered with that paint.

Basically oil based distemper is used for:

  • Home Interior Plasters

  • Brickwork

  • To decorate walls

  • To decorate ceiling

Since so much coverage was required, I decided to get 10 litres of paint. Again the coverage can depend on the number of coats you want to apply on your house interiors. Keep that in mind.

Honestly, I think it’s a hassle to do all these calculations yourself and get supplies. It would be convenient if you just hire professional painters and let them do the job all together.
