The PPAN full form is the Permanent Pension Account Number (PPAN). This is assigned to Central Government and State Government NPS Subscribers and is a sixteen-digit unique number. The Subscriber receives the PPAN from the associated PAO (Pay and Accounts Office)/DTO (District Treasury Office).

Points to remember while understanding the PPAN meaning:
  • A distinct 16-digit Permanent Pension Account Number (PPAN) will be assigned by the PAO in question.

  • The first four digits of this number will denote the year the person entered government service

  • The next digit will denote whether the ministry is a civil or non-civil one

  • The next six digits will denote the PAO Code (which is used to compile monthly accounts)

  • The final five digits will denote the running serial number of the specific government employee, which will be assigned by the PAO in question.

  • From January to December of a given calendar year, PAO will assign a serial number to each government employee starting with 00001.

  • To make sure that PPAN is distributed sequentially, and to avoid any kind of duplication, a register will be kept for PPAN allocation.

I hope this helps!

Having several accounts is actually very confusing. My father has about 4 accounts and remembering each account’s details is a bit tough. The last account is the Pension account and recently I got to know that PPAN denotes the Permanent Pension Account Number where the pension amount gets deposited. It is allocated by the respective Pay and Accounts Office or PAO to the subscriber. If you are new to these details, let me share a bit of information more so that you don’t get confused about what is PPAN in NPS.
