What is Ujjwala Yojana
The PMUY (Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana) is a government scheme that was launched by PM Narendra Modi in 2016. It originally aimed to distribute 50 million LPG connections to women below the poverty line. Later, it aimed to offer LPG connections to 8 crore women by March 2020. Some Major Benefits Offered by PMUY:
This scheme offers 5 crore LPG connections to families that are below the poverty line.
It provides financial support of Rs. 1600 for all LPG connections for BPL households. The Government bears the administrative cost of this support. This subsidy is meant for the security fee for the cylinder, safety hose, booklet, pressure regulator, and other fitting charges.
Oil marketing companies also offer interest-free loans to refill and buy stoves under the scheme.
The PMUY covers every BPL family that comes under all forms of distributorship and distributes several sizes of cylinders (5 kg, 14.2 kg, etc.) as per the field situation.
The people of all Hilly States including the NE States can also avail the benefits of this scheme.
The PMUY scheme also addresses many difficulties faced by the residents in the States of Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Himachal Pradesh in accessing LPG for cooking purposes.
