If you are a working individual you might come across the term professional tax. So what is professional tax? When I first joined I came across the term. After researching I found that professional tax is a tax levied on every professional. The professional tax includes taxes based on professionals, trades, and employment. Professional taxes are levied on employees, freelancers, professionals, etc. We should remember that professional tax is levied when an individual exceeds the monetary threshold.
What is professional tax in India?
According to Article 246 of the Indian Constitution, the Parliament has the power to create laws with respect to the Union List that includes taxes on income. The State creates laws with respect to Concurrent and State lists.
What I have learned is that professional tax is levied by the State Government and therefore, the limit differs from one State to another. As per Article 276, the State Government is entitled to create laws that deal with tax on professions, trades, callings and employment.
What is professional tax in salary?
As mentioned earlier, the slab rates for professional tax differs from state to state. I will share with you the slab rates of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
