Hi Buddy,

The appearance of the cabinets is one of the main (and perhaps one of my sole) goals of my kitchen makeover. I consulted an expert in home interior designing about the same. She suggested that refacing offers the majority of the advantages of cabinet replacement at a fraction of the expense, and can often radically alter the appearance of the kitchen. I asked her, “what is refacing kitchen cabinets?” I was very new to this concept and before opting for it, I wanted to know about it in detail. To my query, she provided the following explanation.

Install cabinets in your home using NoBroker's carpentry services!

What is cabinet refacing?

Cabinet refacing simply involves changing the cabinet "skins" by removing the doors and drawer fronts and covering the exposed cabinet body (or "carcass") with a fresh veneer. During refacing, the hardware—the hinges, knobs, and drawer pulls—is typically also replaced.

What is involved in refacing kitchen cabinets:

It is a three-day timetable, and it may resemble this:

  • Day 1:

Take off the doors, drawer fronts, and hardware. start veneering At the end of the day, tidy up and clean.

  • Day 2:

Continue veneering on. Clean up by the end of the day.

  • Day 3:

Finish veneering. Install new drawer fronts and doors. setup of hardware by finalising the adjustments.

How is cabinet refacing done?

  • The front portions of the cabinet boxes are either veneered with real wood or have other coverings.

  • Wood veneer or laminate is used as the skin for cabinet sides.

  • If required, new door hinges are inserted. Reusing hinges in good shape is another option.

  • There are new drawer fronts and doors installed.

  • Typically, new knobs, drawer pulls, and other fixtures are installed. If the hardware is still in good condition, it can also be utilised again.

  • Crown moulding, glass panels, lighting fixtures, and storage accessories are installed as optional extras.

After understanding, what does refacing cabinets mean, let us move on to determine the advantages and disadvantages.

Pros:
  • Maintains the kitchen's design. If your current kitchen layout satisfies your needs, refacing is ideal.

  • Several alternatives for styling. There are countless different veneer alternatives available for both laminates and real wood.

  • Refacing typically allows you to have brand-new cabinet looks for less than half the price of brand-new handmade cabinets. However, costs must be properly taken into account.

  • A green remodelling choice is refacing. Refacing prevents cabinet boxes from ending up in landfills, which is a huge benefit given that many cabinet boxes are constructed of MDF, which contains the potentially toxic chemical formaldehyde. Additionally, it stops more trees from being felled to make new cabinet boxes.

Cons
  • Finishing for wood veneers could be necessary, including extra procedures for staining and varnishing.

  • There is no way to change the layout. Since refacing does not allow for modifying the layout or expanding countertop space, it is not a choice for you if your kitchen needs a footprint modification.

  • Box interiors stay the same. If your current cabinets don't have shelves or other storage options, changing them to accommodate your storage demands may come at a large additional cost. Interiors that are dingy will require painting.

  • The DIY option is difficult. While veneering is feasible, it is a learned art that should only be attempted by diligent, knowledgeable do-it-yourselfers. However, it is pretty simple to install drawer fronts and cabinet doors.

  • Costs may accumulate. Refacing may not save you much money compared to the price of installing brand-new stock cabinets that are off-the-shelf by the time you add new doors, drawer fronts, hinges, and hardware, as well as interior storage accessories.

I would like to conclude here about what is refacing kitchen cabinets. I hope this helps:)
