When my cousin was applying for a government medical college, he was asked to submit a residence certificate to qualify for a state quota. That’s when we got to know about the residence certificate. In this answer, I will explain what is residence certificate in detail:

A residence certificate or a domicile certificate is issued by a state government to prove that the individual having the residence certificate is a resident of that particular Union Territory or State as mentioned in the residence certificate.

A woman who isn’t originally belonging to a Union Territory or State, but married to a man who is a permanent resident of that particular Union Territory or State or who is eligible for the Union Territory or State’s residence certificate, is also eligible to apply for a residence certificate.

A residence certificate is a document that allows you to avail of several benefits like job, education, and other benefits (Resident Quotas in the educational institutions and Government Service).
