Ryotwari Patta is a land tenure system that was historically prevalent in India, particularly in regions like Maharashtra, Gujarat, and parts of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. It was introduced during British colonial rule as a means of land revenue administration. I have shared a few more ryotwari patta details here in this answer.

What is Ryotwari Patta?

Under the Ryotwari system, individual farmers (known as ryots) are recognised as the direct owners of the land they cultivate. They hold the right to the land and are responsible for paying land revenue directly to the government.

The key features of this are as follows,

  • Farmers are required to pay a fixed amount of land revenue to the government based on the assessment of the land’s productivity.

  • The revenue assessment is typically based on the land's quality, location, and type of crops cultivated.

  • The Ryotwari Patta serves as a title document that establishes the rights of the landowner. It includes details such as the owner’s name, land survey number, extent of land, and other relevant information. It acts as proof of ownership and can be used in legal matters.

  • One of the significant aspects of the Ryotwari system is that there are no intermediaries, such as zamindars or landlords. This direct relationship between the government and the farmers empowers the latter to have more control over their land.

  • The Ryotwari Patta provides security of tenure to farmers, as long as they pay their land revenue. They have the right to transfer, sell, or mortgage the land, provided they comply with applicable laws.

This is all about the ryotwari patta details. Hope this helps!
