Sale deed number is usually written in the following format: Document Number/ Year/ Sub Registrar Office (SRO) initials You can find the sale deed number on the document usually written at the top right corner. In this document, you can see that the document number is 21, year of registration is 19 and SRO initials are 1522 Serillingampalli.

Srivasu, Sanjana and Kamal, I wish I came across your inputs earlier. I lost my sale deed number which was written separately in a diary. Unfortunately due to a fire incident at my place, I lost all my important documents and I had no idea how to get them back. I desperately needed the deed number but didn’t know where to get it from. I finally went to the bank and asked for my property documents which I had submitted as a mortgage with them. I understood what deed no means and its importance. 

I needed the sale deed number to transfer my property to my sister. We got involved in a dispute and I agreed to transfer property to her name to avoid further harassment from her in-laws. When I was about to buy my first property I had no clue about what is deed and its importance. I went to my father to discuss the same. He told me that a deed is a legal document which authorizes property transaction, legal rights and ownership. 

As Mr. Srivasu and Ms. Sanjana have explained here, a sale deed document is drafted on non-judicial stamp paper and acts as a proof of property transaction. 

Recently, I had to submit some documents to the bank for my property and that’s when I realized that the document was misplaced. I tried to conduct a sale

deed search and thankfully in Haryana you can search the details online on Jamabandi portal. 

Here is the process that I followed:

  • I went to the Jamabandi website

  • Entered Tehsil, Registry Number (thankfully, I had it), registry date (can’t forget, it’s my first house) and selected Sale deed from dropdown menu for deed name option

  • Then I entered the verification code and hit search.

I finally found my document and couldn’t have been happier. Of course, I had to pay fees to get an official copy but damn it was easy. 

I basically had to prove that my property is free from any encumbrance hence, the sale deed details were required. 

This time, I have secured my sale deed number and got a scanned copy on my email as well. The sale deed is finally laminated and resting in the safe. I must tell you, I panicked when I realized it wasn’t there and as per rules, I filed an FIR and advertised in the national newspaper. 

Anyway, the bottom line is that the sale deed number is important to get property transaction details, to spot encumbrances, and it will be required when selling the property. So keep it secure.
