When I was filling out an admission form for Delhi University, I didn’t know what self attestation was. I was alone filling out forms and reading each instruction carefully. I came across this phrase ‘self attested documents’ and I had no clue what it meant. I panicked. I didn’t have anyone with me and I was too shy to approach anyone. Finally I mustered up the courage and went on the admission to enquire what is self attested? The guy was in a hurry and he said

“arre photocopy par apne sign kar k de do.”

I did that but I wasn’t sure what happened and what exactly was required. I went home and asked my elder brother what does self attested mean. He explained the following to me.

He said, “it is like you are vouching for yourself that whatever documents you are providing are genuine and authentic.” So, it all made sense. I understood why the guy asked me to submit a signed copy of the photocopied documents.

I further researched to know what is the meaning of self attested and why is it required. This is what I found out:

A self attested copy basically means that you have an original copy of the document and you are submitting the photocopied version with your signature on it. You take responsibility for its authenticity. A self attested copy of a document is generally asked for to carry out official government work.

I hope my answer clarified all your doubts around what is self attested and what it means.

"Self-attested" refers to a process in which an individual provides a document or a piece of information along with their own declaration or verification of its accuracy and authenticity. When a document is self-attested, the person typically signs or marks the document to confirm that the information it contains is true and correct to the best of their knowledge. This practice is often required in various official or legal contexts, such as when submitting documents for government applications, financial transactions, or other formal processes. By self-attesting a document, individuals take responsibility for the accuracy of the information they are providing, which can help maintain the integrity of the process and reduce the risk of fraud or misrepresentation.

I would not have deciphered what is the self attested photocopy meaning unless I was asked for it for some official work. A self-attested photocopy is a duplicate copy of a document that has been authenticated by the person to whom the document belongs. This authentication typically involves the person signing or placing their own signature on the photocopy, certifying that it is a true and unaltered copy of the original document. This is the meaning of self attested photocopy.

How to get the self attested certificate?

You can create your own self-attested copy or certificate. Here is what you need to do:

  • Make a Photocopy:

Start by creating a photocopy of the original document you want to self-attest. Ensure the photocopy is clear and legible.

  • Sign the Photocopy:

On the photocopy, write a statement certifying that it's a true copy of the original document. Sign and date the statement. This signature confirms the document's authenticity.

  • Submit or Use as Needed:

You can now use the self-attested photocopy for various purposes, like applications, verifications, or submissions, as required. Keep the original document in a safe place.

So this is what is self attested photocopy and how you can create your own self-attested certificate.

A certified, notarized, or original copy of a document is frequently needed by a government agency or other organisation. Self-Attested is a term that is occasionally used. Self-Attestation enables you as the document's owner to attest, via your signature, that a photocopy of your original document is an accurate copy. A notary's affidavit is not required for self-attestation. So let me make you aware of self attestation meaning.

Know about self-attestation and how to attest a document from the lawyers at NoBroker.

What is self attested copy meaning?

You must independently verify a document as part of the self-attested meaning process. The owner self-certifies the document by signing it after making a photocopy of it, and it is important to write "self-attested" on the paperwork.

Every document used to need to be signed by a Gazette representative, the executive of an office, or both. The self-attested copy was considered to be suitable for approving a document because people sometimes found it difficult to sign so many documents.

In India, is self-attestation accepted?

In India, self-attestation is accepted. In July 2014, the Indian government eliminated the need for notaries or government workers to certify some legal papers when it was not required by law. Although self-attestation is still not accepted for many papers, it has made a lot of things simpler for the general people.

I first came to know about self attested meaning when I was filling my first bank exam application form. Thankfully, my father was guiding me throughout the process so he told me everything about self-attestation. He told me that attestation is the act of signing a document to attest to its truth, accuracy, or genuineness. Typically, it takes the form of a document's validity being confirmed by a qualified official. The majority of applications for employment, studies, or services demand the applicants produce copies of their documentation.

A self attested

example

would be to have a copy of the exact documents confirmed by gazetted officials of the administration or notaries public, as the case may be, since it is difficult to submit original documents for verification. After confirming the originals, these officers are authorised to vouch for the validity of a document's photocopy. They only provide attestation after seeing the original document in person and being satisfied that it is authentic. These officers refuse to certify documents that appear to be fraudulent or counterfeit. As a result, people are prevented from submitting fraudulent photocopies to receive various benefits. Additionally, it saves government organisations the time spent physically checking each applicant's documentation to see if they qualify for the perks or programmes.

What self attested copy means?

Self-attestation is a procedure whereby the applicant oneself verifies a document. A photocopy of the document is made, and it is then self-certified by adding a signature and, if necessary, writing "true copy" or "self-attested." Self-attestation allows the document's owner to attest to the document's authenticity verbally. It saves the time and money required to locate authorities who can provide attestation and afterwards secure their attestation.

Self-Attestation Process

Self-attestation can be accomplished by merely signing a document's photocopy. Make sure your signature is legible and covers the entire copied document. If there are multiple sheets, sign each one separately. To appear genuine, write the phrase "real copy" in the text.

The steps of Self-Attestation:

  • Make a copy of the required document's original.

  • On the front side, bottom right or left edge of the photocopy, type the words "True copy of the original."

  • Sign below the declaration

  • Repeat the process for each attached page if there is more than one.

  • Along with the application, send the self-attested copies.

  •  Keep the original documents safe

I hope you now understand more clearly about

self attested meaning.
