Steam curing of precast concrete involves the controlled application of steam and heat to accelerate the curing process of precast concrete elements. This method is commonly used in precast concrete production to achieve faster strength development and improved concrete properties. This is what steam curing process means. It has a number of advantages as well about which you can get an idea here.

What are the advantages of the process of steam curing?

Steam curing of precast concrete provides numerous advantages, like:

  • It accelerates concrete's early strength development, allowing for quicker demolding and handling.

  • Ensures consistent curing conditions across elements, reducing the risk of surface defects.

  • Shorter curing times reduce formwork tie-ups, increasing production efficiency.

  • Permits the use of high-strength concrete mixes, resulting in lighter, thinner, yet equally strong precast elements.

  • Reduces cracking risk and enhances resistance to chemical attack and freeze-thaw cycles.

  • Decreases labour, equipment, and energy costs due to shorter curing periods.

  • Guarantees uniform element quality with precise curing control.

  • Allows adaptability to tight schedules and just-in-time delivery demands.

What is high pressure steam curing of concrete?

The product is cured using water vapour at high or ambient pressure. When initial toughness is needed and heat is needed for hydrating in cold conditions, curing is used. Concrete is cured with steam primarily for its strong starting strength. Atmospheric pressure or very high pressure is used to apply the steam cure. Now you know what is steam curing of concrete.

Curing of concrete by steam under pressure - How is it Done

1) A little wait before steaming.

Keep the concrete at room temperature for about 3 hours throughout this step.

2) A phase where the temperature is raised.

The curing temperature is raised to 60°C (140°F) in this step over the course of around 2 hours.

3) A period for maintaining a constant maximum temperature.

Maintain the concrete at its highest temperature for about 2 hours, not exceeding 70 °C (160 °F).

4) A stage where the temperature drops.

Chill the concrete for around 2 hours during this stage.

What are the ways of steam curing?

There are two ways to steam cure concrete:

  • Active steam curing at atmospheric pressure. It is best suited for enclosed in-place structures and produced precast units.

  • Drying in steam dryers at high pressure. It is best suited for compactly produced units.

You are now aware of the steam curing of concrete.
