OCI Vs PIO are both schemes introduced by the Government of India to facilitate various privileges and rights to people of Indian origin living abroad. However, there are differences between the two.

What are the Difference Between PIO and OCI?

PIO (Person of Indian Origin)

  • PIO cardholders were those who had held citizenship of India or whose parents/grandparents were born in India.

  • PIO cardholders were entitled to various benefits such as multiple-entry, multi-purpose lifelong visa to visit India, exemption from registration with local police authorities for any length of stay in India, and parity with Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in economic, financial, and educational fields, except in matters relating to the acquisition of agricultural or plantation properties.

  • The PIO scheme has been discontinued and merged with the OCI scheme.

OCI (Overseas Citizen of India)

  • OCI is a form of permanent residency available to people of Indian origin and their spouses.

  • OCI cardholders are not Indian citizens but are granted many rights similar to Indian citizens except for certain political rights (like voting), buying agricultural land, and government jobs.

  • OCI cardholders have lifelong visa-free travel to India and are not required to register with local authorities for any length of stay in India.

  • OCI scheme continues to be active and is the primary form of overseas citizenship for people of Indian origin.

This is the difference between OCI and PIO card.
