This is a common confusion that even I had during my college. It was last year I told my English major friend we renovated our home, and when he asked me about it, I told him we re-installed new roof tiles and fixed our bedroom windows. He told me it’s a refurbishment. I thought it’s the same thing and ignored him. But later, I looked up online and found the key difference between renovate and refurbish.

What is the Key Difference Between Refurbish and Renovate?

I found the terms are used synonymously but there are some differences between them.

Refurbishment

To refurbish means to fix something or restore it to the original condition, not necessarily new. This might include renovation but it differs slightly from it. For example, transforming a property or home with new decor or fixing damaged furniture or windows is called refurbishment.

Renovation

Renovation means you are completely revamping your space with new furniture, appliances, decor, and more. This includes painting the walls to make the home more appealing and attractive, not necessarily due to damaged condition. When you transform your kitchen or bathroom space, it can be called a renovation project.

So, the key difference is that a renovation might include refurbishment, but refurbishing a space does not necessarily mean you are renovating the home. For better understanding, I have made a table below.

Factors

Refurbishment

Renovation

DIY

Not always DIY friendly. To fix a window, you require professional help.

Renovation is more DIY friendly as you can easily take upon yourself to paint a room or change your decor.

Cost

It is comparatively cheaper.

You need a  lot of materials to transform your room/house. So, it’s more expensive.

Time

Takes less time to complete.

Requires more effort and time.

ROI

You might fix a damaged furniture or window, but it’s a temporary solution.

A renovation provides a higher return of investment.

I hope this will help you understand the key difference between renovate and refurbish.
