I also initially could not understand what is the difference between dampproofing and waterproofing until we did our house renovation. Damp Proofing aims to prevent moisture from seeping into the floors or walls. However, if the liquid pressure is greater, it might not be able to prevent it. That is when waterproofing comes in. Waterproofing acts as a strong barrier against both moisture and water under pressure.

What is the Difference Between Waterproofing and Dampproofing?

To help you understand the concept of dampproofing and waterproofing better, let me highlight the major differences between these two:

Waterproofing

Damp Proofing

Prevents water seeping and moisture completely

Mainly prevent moisture, not water

Waterproofing calls for multiple layers and careful installation.

In most cases, a simpler, one-layer application is provided

Suitable for basements and areas with high water exposure

Best for above-ground walls and foundations

Covers small cracks to prevent leaks

Does not cover cracks or imperfections

You might feel confused about whether to opt for waterproofing or dampproofing in your case without knowing the seriousness of the issue and in that case, you must consult with a professional renovator.

What is Cementitious waterproofing?

Hi, I got waterproofing done for my house a few weeks ago. Earlier, I too, had confusions related to damp proofing vs waterproofing.

But, after we hired the person for the job, he explained to me about the differences. So, let me take you through those in detail.

What is the Difference Between Damp Proofing and Water Proofing?

Before I share the differences, it would help for you to know their basic definitions first.

So, waterproofing is a method which prevents the passage of water in the presence of hydrostatic pressure.

On the other hand, damp proofing is the process, where the absorption of moisture on the surface is delayed in the absence of hydrostatic pressure.

Damp Proofing  Water Proofing

Dampproofing helps in keeping the soil moisture out.

Waterproofing on the other hand keeps all moisture and liquids out.

Dampproofing isn’t capable of bridging gaps.

Waterproofing is capable of bridging gaps in the surface.

Dampproofing isn’t capable of resisting hydrostatic pressure.

Whereas, waterproofing can resist hydrostatic pressure.

Dampproofing can be done at a lower cost.

Waterproofing is expensive when compared to dampproofing.

So, here you have the difference between water proofing and damp proofing. I hope this helps you to understand and differentiate between waterproofing and dampproofing.
