A tahsildar, also known as a talukdar or tehsildar, is an administrative officer in charge of a tahsil or taluk, which is a sub-division of a district in some countries, particularly in South Asia. The term is primarily in vogue in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. A tahsildar is responsible for maintaining all the land and revenue records of the tehsil. The functions of tahsildar are, however, not limited to this. There are many more. Let me share with you the list that I am aware of.
What are the duties of Tehsildar?
There are several other duties of a tehsildar and those are-
Revenue Administration:One of the primary duties of a tehsildar is revenue administration. They are responsible for the collection of land revenue, taxes, and other fees on behalf of the government. Let me share all of them
Land Record Management:Tehsildars oversee the management of land records within their jurisdiction. They maintain records of ownership, transfers, and encumbrances on land. They ensure that land records are updated regularly and assist in resolving land-related disputes.
Issuing Certificates:Tehsildars issue various certificates related to land, including income certificates, caste certificates, residence certificates, and other similar documents. They verify the information provided and ensure that the certificates are issued in accordance with government policies and guidelines.
Settlement of Land Disputes:
Tehsildars play a crucial role in resolving land disputes. They conduct inquiries, investigate land-related matters, and make decisions or recommendations for resolving disputes. They may also mediate between parties involved in land conflicts and facilitate settlements.
Implementation of Government Policies:
Tehsildars assist in implementing government policies and programmes at the taluk level. They ensure that the welfare schemes, developmental projects, and other initiatives are effectively executed within their jurisdiction. Tahsildars coordinate with other government departments to achieve the objectives of these programmes.
Administration and Supervision:Tehsildars are responsible for the overall administration and supervision of the taluk or tehsil they are assigned to. They manage the staff working under them, including revenue inspectors and clerical staff. They monitor the functioning of various administrative activities, provide guidance, and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
Public Services:
Tehsildars serve as a point of contact for the general public. They address public grievances, provide assistance in accessing government services, and facilitate the delivery of public services at the taluk level. Tahsildars may also conduct public meetings, awareness campaigns, and outreach programmes to engage with the local community.
These are the functions of tahsildar.

Hi,
My brother in law has been a state government servant for the last 9 years now and he works as a revenue officer in Punjab. When I saw your question I thought of asking him about functions of tehsildar. I got to know a lot and most of the things mentioned by Sarmana are right. I wanted to add a couple of more things to give you a better idea on duties of tahsildar.
A tehsildar cannot hear any civil suits but he is responsible for magisterial work
As Sarmana has mentioned, they are responsible for revenue duties in their tehsil
His job includes control over working of Patwari and Kanungos as well
A tehsildar is empowered to hear partition cases and to make allotment/transfer and auction of evacuee properties
It is expected that a tehsildar carries out tours of his tehsil during winter sessions and submit tour reports .
A tehsildar is expected to have thorough knowledge of their tehsil and manage it in the best possible manner.
As a part of their duty, tehsildars are required to inspect estates and attest mutations
These are some of the functions of tehsildar which I felt you should know. Let me know if you need some more information, I will get in touch with my brother in law and have it here for you. Nice chatting with you :)
