My home had those metal almirahs, which I hated to my core. These made a lot of noise every time I tried to open them. I decided to get rid of those and get wooden wardrobes instead. I got in touch with a carpenter and told him about the requirements. He asked me how big of a wardrobe I wanted. As I wasn’t aware of the standard dimension of wardrobe, I asked him to give a rough idea about how big they should be.

The designer provided me with a list that had the standard wardrobe dimensions. He said that wardrobes are generally somewhere around the dimensions provided in the list. I have added the list below.

• The width of a hinged wardrobe is about 4 feet or 122 cm which can have double doors. Whereas, for the single doors, the dimensions range from 18 to 22 inches.

• The height is 7 feet or 210 cm, although a few wardrobes can be shorter in height or even be full-heighted to reach the ceiling of the room. 

• The depth is 24 inches or 61 cm. The depth dimension helps to create enough space for hanging your clothes comfortably on the hangers.

  He told me that a normal swing closet dimension is two feet deep in the wardrobe and seven feet high. The width of the wardrobe determines the number and size of the door(s).

• Sliding Wardrobe:

  Then he suggested me a sliding wardrobe. The dimensions of a normal sliding wardrobe usually are 7 feet high, 2 feet deep, and changeable width, just as those of a swing wardrobe. 

• Walk-in Wardrobe:

  According to him, the ideal closet depth for hanging space in a walk-in wardrobe is two feet or twenty-four inches. Also, there should be at least 36 inches, or 3 feet, of clearance, regardless of whether my arrangement is an island or more like a galley with storage on either side. This seemed perfect for my needs.

• Loft

  : Then he also told me about a loft in a wardrobe whose height is determined by the size of the ceiling, but the usual depth stays at two feet. 

• Drawers for clothes:

  Lastly, he said that when it comes to wardrobe design, drawer depth is more important than other factors. So, for clothing and other items, a drawer should be at eight inches, and for accessories, leave it at four to six inches.
