Hi,
Zone 5 is a seismic zone which is said to be most prone to earthquakes. On the basis of scientific data pertaining to seismicity, earthquakes that have already occurred, and the tectonic setup of the region, earthquake-prone zones of the nation have been determined. Based on these inputs, the Bureau of Indian Standards [IS 1893 (Part I):2002] divided the nation into Zones II, III, IV, and V, which correspond to the four seismic zones.
Zone 5 includes the regions that are most susceptible to earthquakes with a magnitude of MSK IX or higher. Zone 5 is given a zone factor of 0.36 per the IS code. This factor is used by structural designers to create earthquake-resistant constructions in Zone 5. Effective (zero period) level earthquakes are likely to occur in this zone, as evidenced by the zone factor of 0.36 (the highest horizontal acceleration that a structure may endure). The Very High Damage Risk Zone is the name given to it. This area includes the Himalayan regions of the Western and Central Himalayas, Kashmir, North and Middle Bihar, North-East India, the Rann of Kutch, and the Andaman and Nicobar group of islands.
I hope this answers your query.
