Clay pots are containers made from natural clay, typically fired in a kiln, and used for various purposes, such as cooking, storing, or planting, due to their porous and heat-resistant qualities. Pot painting in India is a traditional art form that involves decorating clay or terracotta pots with vibrant colours and intricate designs. During Diwali, we paint a variety of pots so I can help you know which paint is used for pot painting. There are many colours you can use so let me share the entire list of colours I am aware of here.

Which Paint is Best for Pot Painting?

Various types of paint can be used on clay pots. I cannot state which paint is best for pot painting but some of the most favourable types of paint are:

Acrylic Paints:

These are widely used due to their quick drying time, vibrant colours, and versatility. They adhere well to clay surfaces and offer good coverage.

Fabric Paints:

Ideal for painting on fabric pots, these paints are designed to be long-lasting and flexible, making them suitable for outdoor use.

Enamel Paints:

Known for their durability and glossy finish, enamel paints are a good choice for pots that will be exposed to harsh weather conditions.

Poster Colors:

These water-based paints are affordable and come in a wide range of colours, making them a popular choice for beginners.

Oil-Based Paints:

These paints provide a smooth, glossy finish and are suitable for decorative pots that won't be exposed to water.

Watercolors:

While not as commonly used, they can be applied for a delicate, translucent effect on pots.

Natural Dyes:

Traditional techniques may involve using natural dyes extracted from plants or vegetables for a more organic touch.

So decide from this list what paint to use on clay pots and start creating the best designs.

Everyone who loves plants loves to paint clay pots and it is a delightful activity for people of all ages. Even I paint my clay pots 3 to 4 times a year to give them a vibrant and fresh look. I believe if you improve the appearance of your container, it will also enhance the appearance of the plant inside. It will allow it to merge with your decor. If you want to preserve your design concept, paint the surface of your pot with transparent spray acrylic after you've finished painting it. It will take several days to dry the pots completely after you finish painting. Let’s see what kind of paint to use on clay pots.

Ideas on what type of paint to use on clay pots:

1) Latex Paint

You can use latex paint to paint your clay pots. You don’t have to purchase a new container of latex paint, you can also use the remaining colour from your house paint. Latex paint is also available in spray form, which allows you to apply many coats on your pot faster. When you use this paint, make sure to protect the pot both inside and out to prevent the paint from fading from the outside due to moisture.

2) Acrylic Paint

Everyone is aware of acrylic paint as it comes in a wide variety of colours. You can start with the base coat and allow it to cure thoroughly. It is the best way to paint the pot with acrylic paint. Then apply a second coat of paint to ensure a smooth, even finish. You may need to apply two coats of paint if the paint soaks into the clay.

3) Oil Paints

We all have used oil paints in our school time and we can easily paint clay pots with them. Oil paints can be used to provide fresh raw clay with a pleasant appearance. Oil paints are typically not utilised on this type of work because of the lengthy drying time, which might take up to months. If you're painting with oil paint, you shouldn't use a finishing layer later.

4) Permanent Markers

I can assure you that it's the easiest way to paint your clay with various colours of permanent markers. You can even write designs or create beautiful textures using markers. Markers are a quick and easy way to add fine detail to your pots. After the project is finished, you should apply a sealant to the pot.

This clears your doubt about what kind of paint to use on clay pots.
