Last Christmas, based on my friend’s recommendation, I booked a free consultation with a NoBroker painter. I asked them, what paint is best for ceilings matt or silk. He said it completely depends on the room’s usage, humidity level, lighting conditions, and so on. He further explained the key differences between them which I listed below for your reference.

Which is Best: Silk or Matte Paint for Ceilings?

I have shared the difference between silk and matte paint in the below table:

Differential factors Matt Paint Silk Paint

Sheen level (level of reflectivity)

Low sheen; hides imperfections

High sheen; more imperfections

Durability

Low durability

Higher durability

Price

Inexpensive

More expensive

Application

Easy to apply; difficult to clean

Difficult to apply; easy to clean

Usage

Ideal for interior walls/ceilings

Ideal for high-traffic areas such as kitchen, bathrooms

The painter informed me that the sheen level describes how glossy the paint will be, which means if it’s less glossy, in case of matt, it will hide the imperfections and look clean. On the other hand, the more the sheen level is, greater is the chance of visible imperfections. However, with low sheen, comes low durability.

The NoBroker professionals who visited our home, also explained which paint will work best for what kind of walls/ceilings. He said

  • Matt works good for interior walls or ceilings as it’s easy to apply, hides imperfections, and is affordable.

  • Silk paint, on the other hand, will make your ceiling look brighter and shiny. It is durable but expensive.

He further said it’s the individual’s choice to decide the best paint for ceilings matt or silk.

As I was looking for an affordable option, I chose  matt paint for my ceiling. However, if you want to give your ceiling a glossy look and are ready to spend a good amount of money, silk is the best choice for you. Hope this answers your query,

is matt or silk paint better for ceilings.

I think both matt and silk paint are suitable for ceilings, but obviously, they have different properties that may make one a better choice for your needs. While getting my home painted last Diwali, I was confused too about what paint is best for ceilings matt or silk. I decided to consult NoBroker for this and booked a home inspection with them. They were so patient with my lack of knowledge about suitable paint. They explained to me clearly about matt and silk paint and also told me about the pros and cons of both tohelp me choose better.

So, before you decide the best paint for ceilings matt or silk, let me tell you what matt and silk paint actually are.

Matt paint is a flat, non-reflective finish that is ideal for hiding imperfections on the ceiling. It is also very affordable and easy to apply. However, matt paint is not as durable as silk paint and may be more susceptible to staining.

Silk paint has a slight sheen that can reflect light and make your ceiling look brighter and more spacious. It is also more durable than matt paint and can withstand more cleaning. However, silk paint is more expensive and can be more difficult to apply.

Ceiling Paint Matt or Silk

Here is a table summarizing the pros and cons of matt and silk paint for ceilings:

Paint Type Pros Cons

Matt paint

Inexpensive, easy to apply, hides imperfections

Not as durable, more susceptible to staining

Silk paint

Reflective finish, brighter and more spacious look, more durable

More expensive, more difficult to apply

Ultimately, the choice of silk or matt paint for ceilings depends on your individual needs and preferences. If you are on a budget and are not concerned about minor imperfections, matt paint is a good option. If you want a brighter and more durable finish, silk paint is a better choice.

No matter which paint you choose, NoBroker's painting service will ensure that your ceilings are painted to perfection.
