If you are planning to buy a property for the first time, or you were only on rent till now, you might be wondering what questions to ask before buying a house in India. Well, let me tell you you're not alone. Even I had the same doubts before purchasing my first home. Then my uncle informed me that before purchasing you should ask about the age of the house, down payment price, and so on.

I have listed out some of the important first time home buyer questions below.

What Questions to Ask When Buying a House for the First-Time?

Asking the correct questions is crucial to making sure you make an informed choice and avoiding future regrets. Some of the important questions are as follows:

  • Inquire about the house's condition, paying particular attention to maintenance, and repair work. You can ask questions like:

    • What is the age of the roof?

    • When was the electrical wiring updated last?

    • What is the monthly cost of utilities?

    • Which appliances are part of the sale?

    • Has it been necessary to make any renovations or additions?

    • Is the house vulnerable to natural disasters or located in a flood zone?

    • How long has the property been listed for sale?

  • Asking about the neighbourhood and its amenities is also very important. You must inquire about the ease of transportation access and the area's proximity to hospitals, shopping centers, retail stores, schools, or educational institutions.

  • Ask about the reason for selling the flat, its price, and whether there is any possibility of a negotiation.

  • Ask about the property tax receipt, association dues, insurance prices, legal property documents, and so on.

When buying your first home, you may make an informed choice if you ask the above questions. I hope you found this answer helpful.

How to check property ownership online in India?

Purchasing a house is a long term investment. Therefore we must do proper research to the house which is appropriate for our needs. Therefore, while connecting with the seller we should learn what questions should I ask when buying a house. I have experience with purchasing houses and so I will share with you the 5 important what questions to ask when buying a house checklist.

  1. What is the budget?

If the property you are looking for is out of budget then it would be a waste of time to talk to the buyer. While you should negotiate when purchasing property, you should also ask the seller what is the last offer. If the property is out of budget, you should search for some other properties.

2. Where is the house located?

It would be a better option to ask the seller if the property is located in a region where flood occurs during the monsoon. It will be an additional headache if you buy a house in a waterlogged region. Imagine crossing the flooded street while going to the office or taking a leave due to a flood! definitely not worth it!.

3. Why is the seller selling the house?

The important question to ask when buying a house is why the seller is selling the house. You should understand if the seller is selling the house. A good agent can definitely find this information for you.

4. What is the age of the house?

If the roof of the house is old, you would probably want to avoid purchasing the house. A house that is more than 20 years old may be weak and you may need to fix damages after purchasing the property. Therefore, this is another important question you must ask your seller.

5. Ask for the Documents

To verify the owner of the property and to check whether the property has any legal disputes, you should ask for the documents and check the papers related to the property carefully. Important documents such as encumbrance certificate, sale deed, Khata certificate, mutation certificate, tax receipts should be checked while purchasing a property.

These should help you know what questions should I ask when buying a house according to me.

I hope this was helpful.
