  Measure the dimensions of your living room to get an idea of the available space. Ideally, you should aim for a carpet that covers a significant portion of the floor but leaves a border of exposed flooring to create a balanced look.

• Furniture layout:

  Consider the placement and arrangement of your furniture. If you have a central seating area, ensure that the carpet is large enough to encompass the entire seating arrangement, allowing all furniture legs to sit on the carpet. This creates a cohesive and visually appealing grouping.

• Room shape:

  The shape of the room can also influence the carpet size. In rectangular rooms, it's common to have the front legs of the furniture on the rug, while in square rooms, you can opt for a rug that accommodates all furniture legs.

• Traffic flow:

  Take into account the flow of traffic within the living room. It's generally recommended to have at least 18 inches of uncovered floor space around the edges of the carpet to facilitate movement and avoid the rug feeling cramped.

• Style and aesthetics:

  Consider the overall style and aesthetic of your living room. A larger carpet can make the space feel more grounded and cosy, while a smaller rug can create a focal point or define a specific area within the room. Choose a size that complements the scale of your furniture and the room's design scheme.

The perfect carpet size for living room is subjective and depends on your individual preferences. If you have a living room with the dimensions 8'x10′ and 9'x12′, then the ideal rug size would be 8″. Anything above 6″ can be used as well.

I think the rug should be kept under the sofa. At least, two legs of the furniture should rest on the carpet/rug. The extension should be 12 to 18 inches beyond the sofa.

Usually, standard-size living room rugs are sized 8’x10′ or 9’x12′. You can pair the rugs and sofa in complementary tones for a clean and polished look. 

Usually, interior designers recommend the rug run the same length as the sofa. There should be 30″ to 36″ walkways between the rug and large pieces of furniture like cabinets. 

If your living room is on a smaller size i.e. 11'x13, you should get a 6'x9' or 5'x7′ rug. There will be at least a 2 inches border visible. If your living room is large, you should stick to a 9'x12' rug. 

You can even place two smaller rugs in a big room for a designer twist. If your room is minimalist and does not have any bright-colored furniture, you can opt for a colourful rug for a pop of colour.
