A few months back, my landlord disconnected my electricity to force me out despite our agreement not expiring. I asked him to restore it as I have been paying rent and electricity bills on time every month. He told me to vacate the house and even threatened me. I called an advocate friend of mine and asked him about what to do if landlord cuts off power?

What to Do If Landlord Cuts Off Electricity?

I narrated the whole incident to my friend and also told him about the threatening part. Here is what he told me.

  • My friend told me that no landlord is allowed to withhold supply for essential services. According to him, I should submit an application to the court complaining about this action.

  • Following this, the court will inquire whether the essential supply or service has been cut off or not. If the court learns that an essential supply or service has been withheld by the landlord, then the court will direct the landlord to restore it immediately.

  • The court can also direct compensation of not more than fifty rupees if the landlord had cut off or withheld the supply or service without just or sufficient cause. If the tenant has made a false or misleading acquisition against the landlord, then the compensation will be directed towards the tenant.

And that’s all he told me about what to do if the landlord cuts off power. I hope this helps.
