Hi Srinivasarao,

Selecting a PG would not be a difficult chore if you are aware of your preferences. So bear the following in mind before finalising the PG and disbursing the security deposit:

  • Distance to your place of work or college: The area of your PG shouldn't be too distant from your place of employment or institution because, if you don't have a personal vehicle, the cost of transportation is typically reasonably high in metropolitan areas.

  • Basic comforts and amenities: Check the lighting and ventilation when you first enter the PG room to ensure that you will feel at home after a long day at the office or college.

  • The furnishings that are available rely on your budget and, obviously, your tastes or selections. If money is not an issue, you should get a furnished PG.

  • Flatmates: During your stay at a PG, your flatmates will act as your extended family. Therefore, make sure you talk to your potential flatmates before signing the PG. Verify if they exhibit an accommodating nature and are like-minded, keeping an eye out for any warning signs.

  • Sanitation and hygiene: Clean restrooms are a feature to consider before choosing a PG. The restroom needs to be hygienic and clean.

  • Meal facilities: Having access to quality, timely meals is one of the main draws for students and professionals staying in PGs. Therefore, you need to ask the administration about the menu, the ingredients used in the preparation, and the serving times.

  • Timelines and Curfews at PG: If you work nights or are a night owl, it is crucial that you are aware of the deadlines and curfew times.

  • Few PGs have a strict no-guests-of-another-gender or too-many-guests-at-once policy. If you frequently have visits from family or other relatives, you should review the guest policy of the PG where you intend to live.

  • Security and safety: The place you select to reside must provide you a sense of security. Renting a PG that is safe and secure should therefore be your main priority.

  • Documents necessary: When you have made the decision to stay at a certain PG that checks all the boxes on your list, you should find out what documentation is needed to board. The advance payment, security deposit, notice term, and refund policy should all be finalised.

I am sure these points will help you choose a good PG for yourself.
