Despite having a clean, contemporary appearance, bentwood furniture has distinctly 19th-century roots. We have a wide selection of contemporary and vintage bentwood furniture in our house that dates from ages. So I can guide you on what type of wood is used in bentwood furniture.

Which wood is used in bentwood furniture?

You can choose from varieties of wood. But as per my opinion and from expert's knowledge, ash and beech are typically the finest. Because they bend smoothly and do not break as quickly as others, stronger wood tends to do during the process.

What is bentwood furniture?

Wooden lengths are twisted into forms and curves by steaming and then drying them to strengthen them. This process is known as bentwood. The method is frequently used to create bentwood furniture, which can take the shape of chairs, desks, footrests, and other typical home items. Bentwood rocking chairs are among the most often produced pieces of furniture using this technique. Their elaborate arms and backs make them ideal for enhancing the look of living rooms or sitting areas.

Guide to making the bentwood furniture:

  • The finest wood for the bentwood technique is thinner wood that is sufficiently thin to let the moisture from the steam quickly soften the wood.

  • The wood is contained in some kind of vessel that receives steam produced by a heat source. You can use a kettle that has been heated on a heater or burner and attach the vent of the kettle to the cage with a heat-resistant hose.

  • The wood will soften once enough steam is produced, allowing it to bend into the shape they want.

  • If you want to prevent the wood from cracking, this process should be carried out gently.

  • You will be required to glue the wood into the desired shape once it has been bent in order to keep it from unbending.

  • MDF is a type of fiberboard that some carpenters use for this. You have to cut the MDF into the shape of the bent piece of wood before being further divided into two halves.

  • Then you have to sandwich the wood between the two sections and firmly secured using a number of clips.

  • As the wood dries in this configuration, it won't naturally unbend throughout the curing process. There are additional techniques, some of which are more effective than others.

I hope you understood what type of wood is used in bentwood furniture.
