My neighbors celebrate Chhath Puja every year and they invite us to celebrate this festival with them. I find the rituals surrounding Chhath Puja a bit harsher in comparison to other Hindu festivals. The rituals involve taking a dip in water bodies/rivers, standing in water and offering prayers, strict fasting (without water), facing the sun for a long time, and offering ‘prasad’ to the Sun during sunset and sunrise. They have invited us this year as well, so I know when is Chhath puja in 2022.
When is Chhath Puja CelebratedThis festival is majorly celebrated in some states in North India like Bihar, Eastern Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. It is also famous in some regions of Nepal. Chhat Puja is a Vedic festival, which is dedicated to Lord Surya (Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya (Lord Surya’s known sister who is also known as Goddess Usha).
People celebrate this festival on the sixth day of the Karthika month. This is why it’s called ‘Chhath’ because it means the number 6 in Nepali or Hindi.
