A few weeks back, I got my house repainted and I noticed that the painter didn’t use primer in the process. I asked him why he didn’t use any and he told me that my walls are quite clean and they don’t require any priming. After that, I asked him when to use primer paint. Here is what he told me.

When Should I Use Primer Before Painting?

Here are a few situations when priming of walls is necessary.

Porous Surfaces

He said these surfaces are like bare wood that has quite a lot of micro holes on them. Using a primer seals these surfaces and prevents the paint from soaking in unevenly.

Glossy Surfaces

Next, he told me about Glossy surfaces. These can be difficult to paint as paint slides off these surfaces. Priming the surface before painting helps the paint to stick to the surface properly.

Stained Surfaces

The last one he mentioned was stained surfaces. He said these surfaces need a primer to ensure the stains don’t bleed through the new paint.

And that’s all he told me when I asked him do you need primer when painting. Hope this helps.

Just like the pillar is the base of the house, the primer is the base coat which helps us get flawless results while painting. To cut down the number of coats and at the same time protect the paint for a long period of time the primer is extremely important for painting purposes. To get the professional-looking finish it is important to use the primer. Let us understand when to use primer paint. We should also learn how to apply primer on wall to get the best results.

When to prime before painting?

Primer and paint go hand in hand while colouring the walls. The paint we use is self-priming but two coats of primer before paint to get an even texture and a pro-finished quality. The true colour will shine out and reflect the room if we use the application of primer before painting. Mostly, painters use one coat of paint but the best option would be to use two coats as mentioned earlier you should definitely use two coats during circumstances including

  • If you are switching from one texture of colour to another such as from semi-gloss to eggshell.

  • If you have repaired your walls recently.

  • Switched from darker tones to lighter tones.

  • If you are painting your bathrooms or kitchen as it is prone to forming mildew or leaching. The primer dries up the paint faster, so using primers in humid places definitely helps.

  • The primers can be used in walls with stains such as water stains. smoke damage, etc.

  • You can use primer on porous surfaces such as wood.

I hope you know now when to use primer paint.
