Hi Wasim. To decide whether granite or marble which is better for staircase, you’d have to know their features. I was also looking at both options and went with granite. The two have their set of advantages and disadvantages, so it is more of a personal preference to choose between the two. I am writing down the benefits and drawbacks of both the materials below to help you make an informed decision.

Marble or Granite Which is Better for Stairs?

Here are the advantages and disadvantages of marble and granite:

Advantages of Marble

  1. It does not deform and has high hardness and strong wear resistance.

  2. It doesn’t have any peculiar smell.

  3. It is resistant to corrosion and high temperature.

  4. It is physically stable and has anti-rust, anti-magnetic, and insulation properties.

  5. It is suitable for any configuration and can take any form.

  6. It looks really beautiful due to the polish.

Disadvantages of Marble

  1. Marble stairs are polished, which makes them slippery. Hence, you’d need anti-slip grooves.

  3. Marble is pretty expensive.

Advantages of Granite

  1. It does not weather and deteriorates easily.

  2. Its appearance can be maintained for several hundred years.

  3. It's harder and acid-resistant than marble, making it suitable for stair steps.

  4. It is more economical than marble.

  5. The mineral particles are finer, which is an indication of a tight and firm structure.

Disadvantages of Granite

  1. In terms of aesthetics, it isn’t as appealing as marble.

  2. To overcome slipping chances, it needs some anti-slip process.

This is all. I hope it helps.

Both marble and granite are popular choices for stairs, but they have different advantages and disadvantages. However, which is best for stairs marble or granite, depends on several factors, including aesthetics, durability, maintenance, and budget.

Granite or Marble Which is Better for Staircase?

To understand which is better amongst the 2, let us focus on the below-given difference table;

Granite Marble

Granite is quite simple to maintain and clean.

Marble shines or glows because of its translucency, which brightens any space you decide to use it in.

There aren't many pattern and colour options available.

It comes with a wide range of design and colour options.

Compared to marble, granite seems less cold.

In contrast to granite, it appears softer.

Granite floors with a high sheen can be hazardous for elderly people and children due to their slippery surface when wet.

Marble's high porosity, which allows it to absorb any liquids or even water with dust, is a major drawback that makes it appear dirty and dusty.

It works well in areas with high traffic.

Not ideal for areas with a lot of traffic because it could eventually wear out or lose its shine.

Granite is a robust, hard, and long-lasting stone. Compared to marble, it is more robust.

Marble is a solid, sturdy, and strong stone.

Compared to marble, granite is more scratch-resistant.

Compared to granite, marble is more prone to scratches since heavy objects can leave marks on the surface.

Granite can withstand acidic foods better than other materials.

When it comes into contact with acidic materials, its colour and texture will alter.

The size, thickness, and quality of the granite slab all affect its price. Granite usually costs between Rs. 60 and Rs. 500 per square foot.

Marble slab prices are determined by the size, quantity, quality, and thickness of the slabs. Marble usually costs between Rs. 50 and Rs. 2000 per square foot. However, the price of pure or very high-quality marble varies greatly depending on its size.

Ultimately, granite is often the preferred choice for stairs due to its durability and low maintenance. However, the decision should be based on your specific needs, design preferences, and budget. If aesthetics are your top priority and you're willing to invest in maintenance, marble can be a beautiful choice for a more formal setting. I hope this helps you select which is best for stairs marble or granite.

How much does marble flooring cost per square foot?

When you are purchasing a house, you are looking for best materials. Something that looks durable, elegant and adds beauty to your home decor. Let me share with you which is best for stairs marble or granite.

Now it is a never-ending debate whether granite or marble which is better for staircase. But I feel granite is the best option. Marbles are expensive and you have to maintain them. After a while dust sits on the marble and the glow fades away. Also, a marble needs proper polishing after 10-12 years.

But granite on the other hand is not so expensive and it doesn't need any maintenance. A weekly cleaning is enough. Let me share with you some other tips on granite so that you can clear your doubt about is granite good for stairs.

  1. Colours

You can find so many different types of granite colours. Marble can only offer boring off white shades. I feel when you are painting your walls you should also think about the flooring as well. A good granite colour can create a good contrast with the wall colour which in turn can beautify the room as well as the staircase.

2. Less slippery

I feel safety is the utmost priority and with kids around the house, the safest option would be to choose granites in the staircase rather than marbles. In case the staircase is watery you will easily slip and fall if it is made up of marble. But this doesn't happen much in granite staircases. So, I feel granite is better.

3. Scratches

You can easily notice even a small scratch on the marble staircase. This doesn't happen with granite stairs. As said earlier granite does not require much polishing after its first installation. It is a good option to invest in granite rather than marble.

If you are  thinking marble can make the room cooler during the summer then you are correct. But the opposite happens in winter and you will get cracks on your feet if you are barefoot on marble floor during the winter.

These were my views on which is best for stairs marble or granite. I hope you like it.
