For sand to be good for construction, it must be free from any harmful impurities like iron, alkalies, salts, coal, and pyrites. It should also not contain any organic materials. I had asked this question to our interior design contractor, and he explained about different sands that are good for house construction. So, let me tell you which sand is best for house construction.

Which Sand is Good for Construction?

I learned that for constructional use, sand should contain less than 3% of silt by weight. Which type of sand is best for construction depends on some criteria which include local availability, quality of sand, and landed cost of sand. There are various types of sands that can be used for house construction.

  1. Natural Sand: Also known as River Sand, it is good for all kinds of construction activities, like concrete production and plastering. However, I found river sand is banned in many areas as it has adverse effects on the environment.

  2. M-Sand: This is manufactured sand, which does not contain any organic materials, making it perfect for construction. I also learned that such kinds of sands are manufactured by crushing aggregates into finer materials of required particle size.

  3. Pit Sand: Since they have coarser grain size, they’re not considered fit for construction activities.

So, for construction, river sand and m-sand are the most suitable. For concrete and plastering, natural sand is usually recommended, but if it’s not available, one can use m-sand for concrete purposes and plaster sand for plastering as well. I was also curious to know the costs behind house construction and found this:

Which type of sand is best for construction?

1) Pit Sand

Pit Sand is another name for the naturally present sand that is typically found 2–3 metres below the surface. The granular structure is extremely rough, asymmetrical, and has harsh ends. It is one of the key characteristics that help the sand adhere to other construction equipment.

2) River Sand

River sand serves as one of the most popular types of sand and is especially widely used for construction due to its texture. Sand has such a smoother surface that due to high demand in the present, it is suddenly prohibited. Sand found naturally in streams and riverbeds is referred to as river sand.

3) Manufactured Sand

Manufactured sand, often known as efficient and environment friendly sand, is the better decision if river sand cannot be found. The end result of breaking granite into a perfect finish helps to produce this sand. It has a good grade because of the shortage of river sand and manufactured sand is now largely used. It is also more sustainable and eco-friendly.

4) Mason Sand

Among the most common forms of sand used in building and gardening is mason sand. This sand has uniformly sized granules that give it a smooth appearance and feel.

Mason sand is utilised for a variety of purposes and is very adaptable. Particularly the exterior finish touch. Mason sand is used to fill spaces between brickwork or rock pieces as well as spaces between pavements in gardening.

5) Concrete Sand

Granite Rock, Porcelain, and Limestone are the three main constituents of concrete sand. Because concrete sand is a composite of many elements, its texture is typically bigger than that of other sands. Sand used in building the most frequently is concrete sand, which has the greatest adhesion capacity.
