Legal services can be costly and at times they can cost a fortune. But very few people know that we can actually avail of legal services. Yes, it is true that we can get legal services free of cost during certain circumstances. So let us understand who are eligible for free legal services in India.

Who are eligible for free legal support?

Under the Legal Service Act, 1987 the National Legal services constituted to offer legal services to weaker sections of society and for organising Lok Adalats to settle amicable disputes.

You can get free services in every State under NALSA. In every district, there is a Legal Services Authority who promotes Legal Services Programmes in the District. Since we know that weaker sections can avail of legal services free of cost we should also learn among the weaker sections who are the eligible for free legal support.

  • A member belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Not OBC)

  • A victim of trafficking in human beings or begar as referred to in Article 23 of the Constitution.

  • A woman or a child

  • A mentally ill or handicapped person

  • A victim of mass disaster, ethnic violence, caste atrocity, flood, drought, earthquake or industrial disaster

  • An industrial workman 

  • A person with an annual income less than the amount prescribed by the government can get free legal services. NASLA provides free legal help to people whose annual income is below Rs. 1 lakh.

To get the legal help you need to fill up the Legal Aid Application form available online at NASLA website. You can also reach out to concerned authorities and send a written letter seeking help if you want to opt for an offline procedure. You must mention the reason for seeking legal help in brief.
