I have been asked this quite a number of times. People ask lessee meaning and ask who is lessee. I have the perfect answer for all of them and you too now.

Let’s say you own a 2 bhk flat in Ghatkopar. You decide to give it out on lease to a nice family who you feel will take good care of your house. But you want to safeguard your property from illegal occupancy, and ensure that the people entering your home are safe in the eyes of the law, you decide to create a lease agreement. 

In such a case, you are the lessor, the one who is giving his/her property for rent. Therefore, the other party is the lessee, who is agreeing to use your property by paying the rent as decided.

I hope this example helps you understand who is the lessee and who is the lessor. 

To define lessee in simple terms, it is the party in a lease agreement who agrees to pay a certain amount as rent to the lessor in return for occupancy of the property or usage of the property for an agreed period of time.

As a lessee, the occupants of the property have the right to have fair rent, basic amenities, etc. The lessee, however, has certain obligations such as not conducting unlawful activities, subletting property without permission, causing damage or harm to the property, etc.
