I remember this once when my father was fixing our lamp at home. While replacing the wire, I noticed it was tightly coated in plastic. I thought, why are electric wires covered with plastic? When I researched, it turns out it is for a very practical reason, i.e., safety. I also came to know plastic acts as an insulator and it keeps the electricity flowing inside the wire. Without this covering, touching the wire results in dangerous shocks or even fires.

Why are Electrical Wires covered with Plastic Coating?

Here are some reasons I found during my research:

  1. Safety: I found plastic insulation prevents accidental shocks if someone touches the wire. It ensures electricity stays contained within the wire.

  2. Prevents Short Circuits: My father also informed me that exposed wires can touch each other, causing a short circuit. Plastic coverings prevent this from happening.

  3. Durability: Plastic protects wires from moisture, heat, and wear and tear, making them last longer.

  4. Fire Resistance: Many types of plastic used in wires are flame-resistant, adding an extra layer of safety.

Once I understood why electric wires are covered with plastic, I realised how important that plastic layer is in making electrical systems safe.

It's actually pretty easy to guess. I remember in my science class I was asked this question in every damn exam. I have perfected the explanation on why are electric wires covered with plastic.

The simple answer is that plastic is a bad conductor of electricity.

Okay let us understand in detail why do electrical wires have a plastic covering.

Imagine you hold a live wire in your hand which is not covered in plastic. What will happen? You will get a shock or there are chances of electrocution. To avoid all of this, a plastic covering is placed on electric wires. This covering prevents the current to flow outside the system.

Plastic is non-reactive material made by polymerization of small organic molecules having higher molecular weight. Another reason for using plastic to cover electric wires is that they are flexible and durable. And of course, it is reasonably priced.

I hope this resolves your query why are electric wires covered with plastic.
