Hi there. I have been living in Bangalore for the past 10 years and the water bills will rise from now on. I read in the news that the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is considering a tariff hike. The reason why are water bills going up is because of the financial challenges that the board is facing.

The Deputy Chief Minister and Bangalore Development Minister DK Shivakumar said there’s been no tariff hike in the last 12 to 13 years and that it is required to solve the financial constraints of BWSSB. Let me share more details below.

Why is BWSSB Increasing Water Tariff?

In the news article I read, DK Shivakumar stated BWSSB has to supply water to 140 crore people in the city. This isn’t possible without investing in the distribution network expansion. BWSSB will probably collapse without a tariff hike.

The board is mainly concerned with the rising electricity bills it has to bear. The electricity bills have increased a lot in the last decade. As per the officials of BWSSB, the electricity bills have gone up from Rs. 78 crores to around Rs. 88-90 crores. This surge has made it challenging to keep enough funds for employee salaries and maintenance. So, the only practical solution at present is to increase the water tariff. I hope this helps you.
