My nephew was studying for his science exam and I happened to be around him. He knew I wasn’t fond of the subject so to tease me he asked, “Maasi why copper is used for electrical wiring?” I had rough idea why but I didn’t want to sound dumb to him so I did some research. I will tell you what I learned.

Buy/rent electrical appliances at a nominal price in your city Why is copper used for electrical wiring? Cheaper than other metals

: Copper is relatively cheap compared to other metals. Another good conductor is Gold but we all know how much it costs. Imagine if wires come with Gold. you’ll be shelling out fortunes.

Good conductor of electricity:

Of course, it wouldn’t be used in electrical wiring had it not been a good conductor of electricity. The higher conductive properties of copper allow electricity to travel a longer distance.

Better ductility:

Copper wires are ductile. They can be bent without any damage. This allows the electric wires to be fitted in closed and compact spaces.

When I told these things to my nephew about copper wiring he nodded and added that copper wiring is also thermal resistant, hence it is preferred.

So yes, this is what I learned from that experience. If someone else knows other reasons why copper is used for electrical wiring, do share.
