I visited Kashmir a few years back after getting wonderstruck by the beauty of nature. The frozen Dal lake actually reminded me of the movie Frozen and Elsa. While going to my hotel I saw all the houses had sloping rooftops. The driver we hired was friendly so while taking us back to the hotel, he asked do you guys have any idea why do houses in hilly areas have sloping roofs?

Well, the answer was pretty simple! Kashmir is a region known for its cold climate. Due to the chilly weather this region receives a lot of rainfall and snow every year. The sloping roof helps the snow and the water to slip off the roof easily. Therefore, for this reason, houses in hilly areas have sloping roofs. After saying this answer he added a few points which amazed me. I will share with you two other points why do houses have sloping roofs in hilly areas.

When the snow accumulates on the rooftop it starts forming icicles from the corner. These icicles along with the snow should be removed periodically as they can drop off any time on anyone when it melts. To remove the snow people in hilly areas, people use a snow rake which helps to remove the snow easily. These rakes work best with the sloping rooftop. The job to clean the snow from the rooftop will be more difficult in a normal house than in a house with a sloping roof.

Another thing to point out: In a normal house if the snow accumulates on the rooftop the temperature will drop rapidly and that won't be a suitable habitat for survival. The sloping roof by draining the snow keeps the house warm.

This is all I have to say about why do houses in hilly areas have sloping roofs. I hope you like it.
