Hey,

As an enthusiastic painter, let me tell you many people are misinformed about humidity for painting. Paint like any other material requires certain conditions for a smooth finish. If you have the experience of painting in different temperatures, you must have realised paint works in a divergent way in different temperatures.

What is the ideal temperature and humidity for interior painting?

Different types of paint require different temperatures. On average, you should paint if the relative humidity is between 40-50%.

Oil-based paints should not be used if the temperature is less than 45°F or 7° C or more than 90°F.

Latex and acrylic paints should only be used if the temperature is above 50°F or 10° C.

Acrylic paints should not be used if the temperature is above 85°F.

Importance :

It is necessary to follow the necessary humidity range for painting. Extreme cold or heat impacts the paint.

Heat :
  • Extra heat causes the surface of the paint to skin over and dry quicker than the bottom layers.

  • The heat becomes problematic for the painter as well as it doesn't make for comfortable work conditions.

  • If it's too hot, then the paint will dry faster than normal. It may sound like a good thing at first but it is not. It leads to paint cracking, forming bumps, blisters, and discoloration.

  • It may even lift from the previously painted surface as well.
Cold :

If you paint at colder temperatures, the paint will thicken. This impacts the finish of the paint.

The painted surface will take longer to dry and longer to oxidise.

This also means the solvent in the paint will take longer to evaporate

Rain :

If you paint in the rainy season, you will notice the paint does not bond well with the surface. Extra moisture leads to imperfections and surfactant leaching.

This is all from my end on the humidity for painting.
