Why My AC is Consuming more Power?

I have noticed that my inverter air conditioner has been using a lot more energy than usual. So, I checked my bill and it does appear to be significantly more this month than it was last month. So I looked into why aircon consume more electricity and found that there are a few causes, including poor maintenance, outdated equipment, and damaged air ducts.

Why my Inverter AC Consuming More Power?

Undoubtedly, a lot of people experience this in the sweltering summer heat. The following factors contributed to this spike in power costs.

Improper Maintenance

The AC may use more energy and work harder if its coils and filters are dirty. I found that having my AC serviced once a year helps increase its efficiency, which lowers the power bill.

Old Air Conditioner

If the AC is very old, then it can contribute to increased power consumption. New versions of air conditioning systems and units are far more efficient than older ones. 

Perhaps it's time to upgrade to a newer, more energy-efficient air conditioning system that uses less energy to run.

Bad AC Ducts

Another factor why AC takes more electricity is poor AC ducts. The ductwork of the AC may be obstructed, in which case its performance will be decreased. You may need to lower down the thermostat a few degrees because you don't feel much air entering your room. This results in the AC using more energy than usual.

These are the few reasons I found when I researched why is my AC consuming too much electricity.

When our AC was not working properly, I called an AC technician and asked him why my AC is consuming more power. After scrutinising our AC, he observed that the dirty air filter was hampering the cooling efficiency of our appliance. This forced our AC to work harder to cool the room, thereby leading to higher power consumption. However, there can be other reasons for the increased electricity consumption of the AC so let me share a few of them here.

Neglecting regular maintenance such as cleaning the coils, lubricating moving parts, and checking refrigerant levels can decrease the efficiency of the AC system, resulting in higher energy usage.

• Improper Sizing: 

If the AC unit is too large for the space it's cooling, it may cycle on and off frequently, wasting energy. Conversely, an undersized unit may run continuously to try to meet the cooling demands, also leading to higher power consumption.

• Leakages in Ducts: 

Ductwork with leaks or poor insulation can result in cooled air escaping before reaching the intended areas, causing the AC to run longer to achieve the desired temperature, thus consuming more power.

• Old or Inefficient Equipment: 

You must be wondering does old AC consumes more electricity, so let me say yes. An old AC tends to consume more electricity than a new one. They may have reduced efficiency over time, leading to higher energy consumption. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can also help ensure optimal efficiency and lower energy usage.

Why Inverter AC Consume Less Power?

Inverter ACs use variable-speed compressors, adjusting their speed to match the cooling needs, unlike traditional ACs that operate at fixed speeds. This allows inverter ACs to maintain a more consistent temperature and avoid frequent cycling on and off, resulting in lower power consumption and increased energy efficiency compared to non-inverter models.
