Why primer is used before painting?

My uncle was painting his house and he asked me to help him out. He said that we need to prime the walls before painting them. I got a bit curious and asked him why primer is used before painting. My uncle told me that there are quite a few reasons because of which primer is used before painting.

Here are the reasons my uncle told me about why primer is used. 

• He said that primer prevents water from seeping into the walls and flaking off the paint.

• Next, primer provides a shield to the external walls from harsh weather conditions and harmful UV rays.

• Primer covers minor/ hairline cracks and pores on the walls to make the look smoother and better.

• It also locks the pores of the walls thus making them easier to paint on.

• Through primer the true shade of the colour is preserved on the wall for a long time.

Why primer is used before painting?

I started painting my house back in 2020, but I faced some kind of challenges while painting, like hard walls, some holes in the wall, scratchy surface. Then I got to know that we can use the primer before applying the color directly on the surface of the wall. The primer basically smoothens the surface of the wall, removes hard area, and makes the surface of the wall more clean to paint easily. 

Another reason to apply primer before directly painting the wall is that it gives clarity to the color that we are going to paint, makes your color or paint looks bold and brighter and feels to your soul like nothing. This is the answer to why is primer used before painting.

When I purchased a house back in 2015, I experienced some kind of problems like the walls were smelling a little bad, and the surface of the wall was not properly cleaned. Then I got an idea to paint the walls with primer to help me get over this thing. It was due to the previous owner having a pet and was a smoker. Then I applied the primer on the wall and painted it with colors after that.

The surface of the wall gets damaged because of the continuous smoke in the kitchen and constant leakage from the roof. The surface of the wall gets damaged because of these reasons and gives a bad appearance to the house. So you should apply the primer to cover up the damages and make it look better again.
